Does this sound familiar?
Signs your child may need this class
- Stares at the picture prompts with nothing to write
- Writes a sequence of events with no shape to them
- Uses the same handful of words and sentence patterns
- Finishes far under the expected length, or rambles past it
What makes writing hard at this age
Most children of this age have plenty to say. What they lack is a way to decide what goes first, what can be left out, and how to make a sentence carry more than one piece of information. None of that arrives by writing more compositions unaided.
How we teach it
Every lesson involves writing, and every piece is marked with comments rather than a grade alone. Pupils see what a stronger version of their own sentence looks like, which works better than reading a model written by someone else.
What the class covers
- Planning before writing — what happens, and why it matters
- Story shape — beginning, complication, resolution
- Vocabulary for description and feeling
- Sentence variety and connectors
- Showing rather than telling
- Reading a picture prompt for ideas
What's included
- Weekly live lesson with guided writing
- Every piece marked with specific comments
- Vocabulary banks to keep and reuse
- Make-up options if a lesson is missed
Questions parents ask
Is P3 too early for a separate writing class?
It is early enough that habits are still forming, which is the argument for it. A pupil who learns to plan at P3 is not relearning it at P6 under exam pressure.
How is this different from the P4 English class?
The English class covers the whole paper — comprehension, grammar, cloze and some writing. This class does writing only, and goes considerably deeper on it. Some pupils take both.
My child has good ideas but writes them badly. Will this help?
That is the common case, and it is the more workable one. Ideas are hard to teach; structure and expression are not.
More general questions are answered on our FAQ page, and our reasoning for capping every class at six is set out in about us.
