The year before the PSLE, used properly

P5 covers the full range of the PSLE paper without the time pressure of P6. It is the best year to fix technique rather than revise it.

Does this sound familiar?

Signs your child may need this class

  • Scores inconsistently across the different paper components
  • Finds synthesis and transformation the hardest part of the paper
  • Writes compositions that are safe and score in the middle band
  • Loses marks in open-ended comprehension despite understanding the text

Why P5 matters more than P6

P5 introduces every component the PSLE paper uses, and it is the last year with enough room to change how a child works rather than simply drill what they already do. By P6 the calendar tends to make that decision for you.

How we teach it

Each component is taught as a set of question types with a recognisable way in. Pupils write, get their own work marked with comments, and see the reasoning behind a model answer rather than only the answer.

What the class covers

  • Comprehension — open-ended answering technique and inference
  • Synthesis and transformation
  • Cloze passages, grammar and editing
  • Vocabulary in context
  • Situational writing for different audiences
  • Composition planning and structure

What's included

  • Weekly live lesson with guided practice
  • Marked written work with specific comments
  • Model answers with the reasoning shown
  • Make-up options if a lesson is missed

Questions parents ask

Should we wait until P6?

Most of what helps is technique, and technique takes time to become habit. P6 is often spent revising content, which leaves less room to change how a child approaches a question.

Which part of the paper do you spend most time on?

It depends on the class. We start from where the marks are actually being lost, which differs between pupils, and a class of six makes that practical to work with.

Is composition covered here or in the writing class?

Composition planning and structure are covered here. The separate P5–P6 English Writing class goes considerably deeper on writing alone, and some pupils take both.

More general questions are answered on our FAQ page, and our reasoning for capping every class at six is set out in about us.
