Does this sound familiar?
Signs your child may need this class
- Writes competently but always lands in the same band
- Plans nothing and starts writing immediately
- Relies on memorised phrases that do not fit the prompt
- Runs out of time, or finishes with the ending rushed
Where compositions stall
A composition that is neat, grammatical and on-topic will still sit mid-band if nothing in it is doing any work. The gap is almost never handwriting or spelling — it is that the piece has no shape, or the shape does not fit the prompt.
How we teach it
Pupils write every week and every piece is marked with comments. Planning is taught under the same time limit the exam allows, because a planning method that only works with unlimited time is not a method a pupil can actually use.
What the class covers
- Reading the prompt and choosing an angle that fits it
- Planning under exam time constraints
- Structure — pacing, complication and resolution
- Description that carries meaning rather than decoration
- Dialogue and showing character
- Situational writing for audience, purpose and format
What's included
- Weekly live lesson with guided writing
- Every piece marked with specific comments
- Model paragraphs with the reasoning shown
- Make-up options if a lesson is missed
Questions parents ask
My child memorises good phrases but the marks do not move. Why?
Because a memorised phrase that does not fit the prompt reads as exactly that. Markers notice. What moves a script up a band is usually structure and relevance, not vocabulary.
How is this different from the P5 or P6 English class?
Those cover the whole paper. This one does writing only and goes much deeper on it. Pupils who are losing most of their marks in composition often take both.
Can a child join this in P6?
Yes, though sooner is better. Writing improves through marked drafts, and that takes a number of weeks rather than a number of lessons.
More general questions are answered on our FAQ page, and our reasoning for capping every class at six is set out in about us.
