Why Sec 1 matters more than it looks
Lower secondary Math rarely feels urgent — the exams do not yet count towards anything — which is why gaps formed here so often go unnoticed until Sec 3, when they become expensive. Algebra is the specific thing to get right: nearly every later topic assumes it.
How we teach it
Students work problems during the lesson rather than watching them being worked. Written method is checked individually each week, because sign errors and manipulation slips are habits that need catching early. Where a student’s foundation from primary school is shaky, we go back and repair it rather than building on sand.

Questions parents ask
My child did well at PSLE but is struggling in Sec 1. Is that normal?
Very. Secondary Math introduces abstraction — letters standing in for numbers — and that is a genuine conceptual step. Students who get support early rarely have trouble later; those who wait often find Sec 3 difficult.
Are Sec 1 and Sec 2 taught in the same class?
No, they are separate classes so that the content matches what each student is studying.
Does this prepare for E-Math and A-Math later?
Yes. The algebraic fluency built here is exactly what both upper secondary courses assume students already have.
