Does this sound familiar?
Signs your child may need this class
- Stares at a problem sum with no idea where to begin
- Understands the concepts but loses marks on PSLE-style twists
- Repeats the same careless errors despite being told about them
- Spends hours on homework without the grade moving
- Finishes the paper late, or does not finish at all
Why more practice papers often do not help
A pupil who does not recognise a question type will practise a hundred problem sums and remain stuck on the hundred-and-first, because each one felt like a new problem. The pupils who improve quickly are usually those who learn to sort a question into a family first — this is a before-and-after ratio question — and then apply the method that family calls for.
How we teach it
Problem sums are grouped by the method that solves them, not by the topic they sit under in the textbook. Pupils attempt each question before the method is shown, so they experience the recognition step themselves. Written working is reviewed individually — with six pupils at most, there is time for that every week.
Checking routines are taught explicitly, because careless errors are a habit rather than an accident, and habits respond to a routine.

Who teaches it
Mr Ryan
- Degree in Applied Mathematics
- Years spent analysing PSLE paper question patterns
- Teaches problem sums by method family rather than by topic
Most pupils are not stuck because they lack knowledge. They are stuck because they do not recognise which kind of question they are looking at.
What the class covers
- Problem-sum method families and when to use each
- Ratio, proportion and percentage techniques
- Whole numbers, fractions and decimals
- Area, perimeter, volume and circles
- Patterns and average
- Timed paper practice and checking routines
What's included
- Weekly live lesson with worked problem sums
- Practice sets grouped by method rather than by topic
- Individual feedback on written working
- Make-up options if a lesson is missed
Questions parents ask
My child is weak in Math. Is this class suitable?
Yes. The class is built around method recognition, which is precisely what pupils who feel lost in problem sums are missing. We start from the method families and build up.
How is this different from other Math tuition?
Most classes teach content topic by topic. We group questions by the method that solves them, so pupils learn to recognise a question type on sight. That recognition is what makes unfamiliar problems approachable.
Is the class taught in English or Mandarin?
Lessons are conducted bilingually so that pupils who think more comfortably in either language can follow.
